PASSION: THE BRIGHT LIGHT OF GLORY BY LOUIE GIGLIO

This book is written by a team of leading preachers and Christian voices, all involved in Passion Conference for college students. The book traced the trail of Passion Movement which based on this very verse in Isaiah 26:8, "Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts." 

I was thrilled to read Giglio's unwaning passion for Passion in the book. I could see his passion translated to those he worked with and more so, to the millions of youth who excitedly came for the conference each year. All who wrote in this book shared in his excitement and cooperatively served their best to the theme of the verse above.

Louie Giglio and team have never wandered off the tangent of the audience of One, Jesus Christ! Throughout the book, the LORD is being glorified, pleased, shouted forth, boasted of and supremely desired in all their hearts! I give this book 5 stars!

NELSON'S ANNUAL PREACHER'S SOURCEBOOK, VOL. 3 by Dr. O. S. HAWKINS

This book has a wide variety of sermons to choose from and great ideas to ponder upon. As a preacher myself, it is a book that adds to my understanding about the passage of Scripture given there. I don’t follow them but it allows me to better grasp some topics presented. Somehow I was not really excited about this book because of several reasons. Firstly, a preacher needs to hear from God and not extract from other preachers. Secondly, following it may damper the creativity of a preacher. Lastly, the audience in each congregation is different and sometimes a sermon may work well in one but totally disastrous in another. So, for me, I am just okay with this book.

FORGIVENESS - OVERCOMING THE IMPOSSIBLE BY MATTHEW WEST

This is a book about doing the most difficult task – to forgive. What I like about Matthew West’s forgiveness is the real life stories of brokenness and despair of being hurt and the laboriously burdensome journey to forgiveness. Although the stories here ended with forgiveness and victory, there are always real incomprehensible struggles within each character. There was always the “why me?” question ringing loudly within. At the end, it was God! The grace of God that always manages to set the pace for healing in all kinds of hurt. And I believe Matthew West in this book shouts, “It is possible!”  Not humanly possible but God-possible! The author’s intention is clear: do not let unforgiveness keep you bound, let forgiveness set you free to your God-given destiny!

YOU’LL GET THROUGH THIS – MAX LUCADO

He has done it again! This time, Lucado has inspired and stretched me with his insightful views and no nonsense approach to suffering. His artistic writing skill of Old Testament’s story of Joseph penetrated into my spirit deep within. The book would hopefully provide an encouragement and relief to those who are going through severe trials that indeed, God will get them through! In the end, one thing is clear in this book, we will go through trials and there is no easy way out. However, we will get through any trials if we do not give up on God! Words of men sometimes are not enough to heal a hurt but when the eyes of sufferers are focused on God, they would eventually sail through! The Joseph's story is true testament to what God can do in our lives if we let Him.

I give this book 5 stars.

BILLY GRAHAM IN QUOTES by Franklin Graham and Donna Toney

I love reading whatever books and articles concerning this man called Billy Graham. There is so much to learn from this spiritual giant of a man. This book is precious to me for several reasons. First of all, I could just flip to many of his quotes at will to learn from him and his many years of experience. Secondly, I can get to keep his quotes at hand, whenever I preach or share, I could use them. Thirdly, the compilations of topics and dates of the quotes make it easier for me to find his quotes. Most importantly, I am so blessed to be able to strengthen my spiritual life with so many golden nuggets from the greatest evangelist of the 20^th Century. He left a true spiritual legacy not only in his quotes but more so, his well-lived life! I give this book 5 stars.

GODS AT WAR – KYLE IDLEMAN

This is the most comprehensive book on idolatry that I have ever read. Often times, Christians today are underestimating the powers of all kinds of idolatry seeking their focus and eventually sucked their faith dry. These so called ‘gods” would entice and lure all whose hearts are unprepared for war against them. The author identified the various ‘gods” but also warned of their powers. He showed the reality of all these by giving real life stories and how these “gods” had damaged them spiritually and mentally.

Although the book suggests a serious battle for our spiritual lives, it offers hope for all. The Almighty God is on our side! God is actively and jealously pursuing men and women to be who He wants them to be! There are stories of victory! It is possible to stay focus on the true and living God. The “gods’ of idolatry can be defeated! 

This book is both inspirational and practical and I enjoyed it thoroughly! I highly recommended to all who desire to go all the way for Jesus!

WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE – MARK DRISCOLL

One of the best books I have read on finding our identity in Christ. Interspersed with real life stories, the author brought to life the passages of the epistle to the Ephesians. In today’s upside down world of brokenness, the importance to grasp our solid foundation in Christ cannot be taken for granted anymore. Many young people have lost their footing in Christianity and wavering about between what is the philosophy of the world and what is of the Bible. Peer pressures and the unreal world of entertainment have clouded the eyes from seeing what God sees in His sons and daughters. Mark Driscoll’s seriousness of wanting readers to stand upright in this broken world is permeated in every page of this book. The reading of this book must not be rushed. I hope this book can help Christians appreciate the Bible even more as they grasp the full meaning of who we really are in Christ. The title of the book also gets the attention of everyone, both believers and unbelievers. I urge everyone to get hold of this book and praise God for what He has given to us and done in us! I give this book five stars!

GOING DEEP: BECOMING A PERSON OF INFLUENCE by GORDON MACDONALD

This Book is a moving, practical, fictional story written by a pastor at heart. Although the story pans out quite perfectly in the book, (real life may not be so smooth) the focus is there. Are the churches today willing to pull every resource and manpower together to cultivate deep people for greater influence in the world? Gordon MacDonald has provoked thoughts from both young and old. The elders and the leaders must continue to learn and then be available to cultivate deep people of the church, especially the younger generation. They are to be patient with them. The younger generation must be willing to be cultivated. Anyway, it takes two hands to clap. The author makes it clear that not everyone would love to be cultivated or willing to go deep in God.  Some obviously are not ready.

While I love all the practical lessons learnt, somehow, I still think this book is written for those whose age in ministry has caught up on them. These elders must now pass on the mantle. Nevertheless, the book has brought out a sharper focus on discipleship, albeit through some new captivating words. A good read. I give this book a four star.

HEAVEN IS FOR REAL - TODD BURPO AND LYNN VINCENT

What I found interesting about this book is the authors’ eagerness to make sure everything seen in heaven is being verified by the Scriptures. This well written book also grants readers a sense of suspense of what’s next. I know that everyone wants to know a little bit more about heaven, but to me, heaven is not only what this book is all about. The authors’ intention is to uplift readers as they struggle through many areas of their life by this heavenly journey. Today’s world is all about visuals and this could be the best method to present Christ and inspiring messages to the masses. Personally, I always have been careful when someone told of his or her journey from heaven to earth but this book did change me quite a bit. An inspiring book for all and I recommend it for everyone!

MAX ON LIFE. ANSWERS AND INSPIRATION FOR TODAY'S QUESTIONS.

This is a very different Max Lucado’s book that I have read. Indeed, it is a much needed book in a society which is getting more complex and difficult. The author did the right thing (and a right time too) to come out with a reference sort of a book like this as ‘real’ people are asking real questions more and more today. He did cover wide range of issues that anyone of us are bound to ask from time to time if we are still breathing in this world. So, this book is not primarily for others only or only for those who think that they are the “answerman” or “answerwoman” but for all of us.



I like especially the author’s terse answers for difficult questions on every issue. People who are suffering need precise and pertinent answers from God’s Word. No beating around the bushes. While the questions are often hard and challenging, the answers are comforting, frank and honest.


I believe it has been quite a while for me to have read a questions and answers book and truth be told, it was both enriching and refreshing. And the answers are not only doable but quotable too. Well, I enjoyed it and highly recommend to all who are still breathing now.

THE PRINCIPLE OF THE PATH – ANDY STANLEY

The principle of the path is a simple concept yet so powerful. I believe many readers initially would say, ‘Andy, can you write something new?’ but as they read on, they change to ‘Andy, can I have more?’ Andy Stanley, like any great writer would, presented to us concise unambiguous principle of life. This is a complicated world and people make difficult choices and this book if carefully adhered to would be life and destiny changing! In fact, not only Christians can benefit from this principle but everyone should get a hold on it. This book has disturbed me in a good way as I now have to think through every path I take. I highly recommend this book to everyone who is serious about life and destiny. I give this book a five-star!

IN CONSTANT PRAYER – ROBERT BENSON

As a Pentecostal, I have learned spontaneity in all my praying life. This book has opened a new dimension to my praying world in the ‘daily office’ prayer. After finishing the book, I must confess that I know little of praying the ancient prayer and the power contains therein. Therefore, it has been a difficult read but nonetheless, enriching. I admire Robert Benson in writing this book that he never did criticise any other forms of prayer but only to present his best know how of prayer to the world. He was transparent throughout his book and with this; he has already won and warmed my heart. This book is for everyone who has lost the burden of daily prayer life and desires to come back to a fixed time of communion with God. I give this book a three-star.

OUTLIVE YOUR LIFE - MAX LUCADO

In Outlive Your Life, Max Lucado has outshone every other book of his that I had read. This is a compelling book that every serious follower of Christ must get a hold of. The more I turned the pages, the more it stabbed deep into my heart. I have to humbly take off my lenses of self-centredness and “thought-I-have-it-under-my-wings” when I finished the book. Truly it is an amazing book that depicts the very heart of God. If only believers of the LORD Jesus Christ, who gave His all for us, will give our best to impact our world. If only we Christians chucked aside “what’s-in-it-for-me?” attitude to “how-should-I-help?” mentality, then healing and hope would have saturated this broken world. Thank you, Max, for your heart of gold fashioned by the heart of God.

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS GOING ON? - DAVID JEREMIAH

Although I have been an avid end-time student and teacher as well, this book builds on my excitement concerning the soon coming of our Lord Jesus Christ! Dr. Jeremiah is an exciting writer and his passion for God is all over the book. This is an amazing and timely book for such a time like this. Many people simply scratch their heads at the unpredictability of events in the world today and this book can offer them the stability that they long for. All in all, it is a book that I believe will win loads of pre-believers to the Lord Jesus Christ! I give this book 4 stars.

SAME KIND OF DIFFERENT AS ME – Ron Hall and Denver Moore with Lynn Vincent

This book has brought out in me so many emotions even with those that have left dormant for some time. It was inspiration, laughter, anger and grief all rolled up into one. All in all, it left me breathless in many parts of the book. The writings of both Denver Moore and Ron Hall are witty and purposeful, not forgetting captivating. I have lost count the things I have learned from this book and as a Christian and pastor, I highly recommend to all genuine believers in Christ!

I am inspired with the honesty, passion, love and godliness by all the characters in this book and what is so awesome about all this is it is a true story! So often we want to do what we want to do but doing what God wants to do will far exceed what we ever desire to do. I sincerely think that this book can be turned into a great movie. I believe the late Deborah Hall, so central to the whole book, the magnificent passionate Christian, may amen to that!

YOU CAN BE EVERYTHING GOD WANTS YOU TO BE - MAX LUCADO

I have been reading some heavy stuff lately and truly thank God for this book’s timely interruption. This is like God’s gift for me personally for I simply adore simplicity. Max Lucado has a knack for touching hearts especially putting together those that are fragmented. Short passages from every page form one line of thought – God’s loving hand upon our lives. Each one of us is special and called to be who we are. The best role you play in the divine drama directed by our Master from heaven is you. God will use your story to fit into His story. I have been a fan of Max Lucado since God knows when and every book never seems to disappoint me. This one’s included. I give 4 stars to this book.

Book Review – JESUS MANIFESTO - Leonard Sweet & Frank Viola

Have we lost Jesus? What is the consequence of losing Jesus?

The answer to the first question is “almost” and to the second, “everything!”

JESUS MANIFESTO is to me a timely Book, a Now Book in a time where Christians did almost everything, sometimes wonderfully efficient, without clearly giving glory to Jesus who is everything we existed for! This book sets me free from knowing there is much more about Jesus that I don’t even realise. So much I thought I know and then comes this spoiler! Jesus Christ is so simple to understand yet so profound to grasp. It is so easy to learn about Jesus, yet so difficult to study Him.

Throw out WWJD, reject imitating Christ and start to embrace the imparting of an implanted Christ in all of us. Those were revolutionary thoughts to me. Sometimes it is so comfortable to do everything we know and are familiar with. JESUS MANIFESTO invites us to go where most of us would resist, like just doing what the Father asks us to do. Is that difficult? Seems like it. This is because we cinch it. We have everything under control. Take away that control, pry open our grip, we may find ourselves shoving and kicking in disagreement.

One of the most compelling messages for me in this book is that the church is Jesus Christ in corporate expression (Pg. 143). Before I am lost into the mysterious world of the Person of Jesus Christ, I am awakened to that familiar word I grew up in. So much so that the authors want to restore the supremacy and sovereignty of Jesus Christ, they hit the nail in bringing out the community called church which we can express ourselves. They put it succinctly; Jesus Christ cannot be separated from His church (Pg. 141).

Clearly, I am mesmerised quite a lot by this Book as I am seeking Christ more and more in these trying times. But to those who stroll through their Christian walk casually may find this Book a little bit boring.

I give 4 stars to this Book.
